According to a recent Nielsen survey, some of the most common resolutions people set in the new year are about health and wellness.
You’ll get a lot further on your health journey with a little help from your friends at WPS. Here are some tips and tricks to get you started and stay on track with your health and wellness goals, at any time of the year.
Resolution: Finding your healthiest “YOU”
Health and weight management are about much more than numbers on a scale. Everyone has his or her own unique body and ideal weight, which is why nutritious eating and regular exercise are healthier and more achievable goals than simply shedding pounds.
Dieting often doesn’t work and can, in some cases, actually be harmful to you. Instead of focusing on one diet, aim for big picture changes to improve your overall well-being.
- Improve your eating habits by trying new, more nutritious foods and swapping out packaged and processed foods for fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
- Create a regular fitness routine and commit to it. If you’re new to working out, start slowly and increase the time and intensity every week.
- Pledge to rethink your body image, your lifestyle, and your actions.

It’s important to note that being overweight or obese does carry risks: heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, or sleep apnea. Not sure if you’re in the danger zone? Take this quiz to find out whether your waist size and BMI (Body Mass Index) are increasing your risks.
Resolution: Say goodbye to tobacco
There’s no better time to quit smoking or chewing tobacco than right this minute. As soon as you quit, your risk of heart attack, stroke, lung disease, gum disease, and cancer begin to decrease.
It won’t be easy, but there are many resources out there to help you get started. Check out the Smoking Cessation section in our WPS Health Center. There, you can:
- Take a quiz to help you figure out if you’re ready to quit
- Calculate how much money you spend on cigarettes and chew
- Find support groups, quit-smoking hotlines, and mobile apps
- Plan your quitting strategy
The Health Center can also help if you’ve already quit but are facing cravings or need help staying tobacco-free.
Resolution: Breathe easier with less stress
Everyone experiences stress now and then—at work, at home, or out in the community. But too much stress, and not being able to manage it, can negatively affect your relationships, your mental and emotional health, and even your physical well-being. Stress can cause headaches, upset stomach, and pain in the short term, and in the long term can affect your immune system, skin, lungs, and heart health.
(How stressed are you? Take this interactive stress test to see whether you’re at risk.)
The good news? You can take control and learn to manage your stress. Here are a few quick and easy ways to start feeling more relaxed right now:
- Meditate, try a breathing exercise, or practice yoga
- Write about what’s bothering you
- Talk it out with family or friends
- Listen to or play music
- Do something you enjoy, whether that’s a hobby or volunteering
- Take time for self-care: eat well, don’t smoke, and get plenty of sleep
It’s also good to find ways to avoid stress if you’re able. The Stress Management section in the WPS Health Center has suggestions for identifying stressful situations and figuring out the strategies you need to cope; tips for goal setting to reduce stress; and resources for other places to get help should you need it.
