Read your way to lower stress

Many people have stress in their lives. There are many signs of stress. How people deal with this stress varies among individuals and situations. Some people enjoy exercising to relieve stress, while others get massages, listen to music, or participate in some sort of prayer. I recently rediscovered that reading helps me relieve stress.

Reading is something you may have dreaded in your youth. I know I cringed at the thought of opening Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter during my freshman year. As the years progressed, I found that opening a good book or magazine was actually quite soothing.

The key is to find a topic that you enjoy. It may be a suspense novel, romantic novel, biography, or something as simple as a magazine. But if you have an interest in a topic or a particular story, you are more likely to continue reading. Even if you are not into reading, try to find something along the lines of a how-to book for a hobby or project.

Reading allows you to step away from the real world, leave your stressors behind, and explore your imagination. If the setting of your novel is familiar to you, perhaps a remote northwoods cabin, you may find your mind transporting you into the plot.

Reading allows you to learn about other cultures, explore new areas, and solve problems all from the comfort of your home. It is a great exercise that will help keep your mind, soul, and body healthier, leaving you feeling less stressed—so give it a try!
